How does pay per click work?

Out of some eighteen million websites, only a small proportion get enough traffic to their website to enable them to grow & increase sales. The rest do not manage to capture the much needed traffic required to keep the site up and running.

In order to help you understand how a Pay Per Click campaign may work, lets follow this scenario:

Let us assume you own a shop selling sports wear. Your website is www.JohnsSportsWear.com

If you were to use a Pay Per Click search engine, you would register some keywords and phrases into it which are relevant to your business. In this case, they may be:

* Sports Wear Trainers
* Sports Bags etc

You would then bid an amount for each phrase. For example:

* Sports Wear: 10 pence
* Trainers: 15 pence
* Sports Bags: 20 pence

Your competitors may choose to do the same.

Let us now assume a potential customer then goes to a search engine like Yahoo.co.uk and searches for Sports Wear.

Yahoo will check to see who placed the highest bids for this phrase and accordingly, will list the top five bids that match this phrase. Your site will then be listed.

If a visitor now clicks on your link to go to www.JohnsSportsWear.com, you will automatically be charged 10 pence.
